Weekend in London

We have just spent a weekend in London with some of our friends from France and Germany.
In spite of the English weather, everyone had a good time. Some visited the Tower of London, some went on the London Eye, some visited the Tate Modern and some even went to Harrods! The organisers were warmly thanked by everyone for all their hard work.
We shall soon be working on the next project we are doing together: providing a creche in Tanzania for children who spend most of their lives on the streets.

Some of us spent a lovely weekend in Oxford with members of our two contact clubs, Enghien-les-Bains in France and Hameln in Germany. They were very interested in Oxford and surprised to learn that so many well known people were educated there. At the end of the weekend, a large cheque was presented to District Governor Euan Eddie. This was from all three clubs to go to Burkina Faso in Africa, where the people are desperate for safe drinking water and sanitation.

Inner Wheel’s 80th Year

We are delighted to have Rosemarie Barnes as our president for our 80th year. We started the year off with a strawberry tea, then we had a pub lunch and a coffee morning at Rosemarie’s home which raised over £200 for our charities which, this year, are the Cerebral Palsy Unit and Stepping Stones. Soon we’re off on a visit to Tea Pot Island and in October we shall be celebrating with an Interclub Birthday Lunch at Upchurch Golf Club.

The president and secretary were invited to attend a Rotary meeting this week and meet the new Rotary District Governor. He expressed his support for Inner Wheel. Thank you to President Ramu and club members for welcoming us.

All proceeds to Cerebral Palsy Care Centre at Cliffe Woods.

The owners of the Golf Club have been very helpful in offering a price for the day that will enable us to offer an extremely good value package and still raise money for the nominated charity.

This will include, on arrival Coffee/Tea and a Bacon Roll, 18 holes of Golf and a 3 course evening meal plus entertainment at the Golf Clubs Rivers Restaurant.

We are looking for teams of 4 at £160.00 per team.

We also welcome individuals at £40.00, providing that they are happy to be teamed up into a four at our discretion.

This is a not to be missed bargain which is in aid of an extremely worthwhile local charity

Tee off times 09.00 to 13.00. Facilities are available at the club for a wash and brush up prior to the evening meal.

We are also looking for sponsorship for each hole. Sponsors to provide their own advertising which we will place at the respective hole prior to the event. Holes 1, 10 and 18 will be at a premium.

Minimum sponsorship per hole we suggest at £100. We are not recommending a maximum.

Visitors to the evening are welcome at a cost of £25 per person.

Inner Wheel – Teddies on the move!

One of our members, Allison Burns has taken some teddies to Sri Lanka. They have gone to Donbosco Home for Boys in Negombo where many of the boys are victims of the tsunami. Rosemarie Barnes has now made 32 teddies, plus 4 which are waiting to be stuffed!

Our next meeting is on World Inner Wheel Day and we have a speaker from Medway Cyrenians, talking about the work they do. It’s at our usual meeting place, hope to see everyone there, with as many teddies as possible!!

Two new Paul Harris Fellowships for Rotary Club of Gillingham

The Paul Harris Fellowship is an award which is given to members who have given outstanding service to the Club. These awards can not be bought and as such are considered a great honour.

We are please to have made two awards recently to two Past Presidents who have worked extremely hard and have given great service.

Ben Troke who has now retired from the Club and moved out of the area, received his recently when President Steve and his Wife Jacqui visited him

The second recipient is Past President John Porter who received his award at our annual Christmas Party this month. Both are delighted to have received this well earned award.

Recipients are not aware that they have been nominated, so it was a great surprise to both of them.

Gates Foundation gives Rotary International another $255M to help eradicate Polio
